Vanguard Aphelios TFT Set 18 Ranked Comp

A tier S TFT Set 18 ranked comp for patch 18.1: how to build it, which items and augments to prioritise, and how to position it.

Fast 8Vanguard

How to Play

Vanguard Aphelios plays a standard Fast 8 curve, banking gold and levelling steadily while Brambleback, Ancient Sentinel, and Taric hold the front. Aphelios needs real attack speed items to come online, so prioritise finding his components early.

Early Game

Play a normal econ opening and hold any Vanguard or Elderwood bodies you find, since there are two viable versions of this comp depending on which frontline trait you complete. Zyra is a cheap enough early utility piece to slot in as you look for your core four-costs.

Mid Game

Push to level 8 and start slotting in your three Vanguard tanks as you find them. Alune's buff to your Lunar units is a nice bonus once she's on board, but the comp doesn't depend on her to function.

Late Game and Final Board

A fully itemised Aphelios behind a complete Vanguard frontline is rated S tier across every tracker checked, though flagged consistently as one of the harder comps in the format to pilot well. Positioning and itemisation both need to be close to correct for it to pay off.

Best Items

Giant Slayer and Guinsoo's Rageblade are close to mandatory on Aphelios, with Kraken's Fury as the third slot to push his attack speed further. Nothing else in the comp needs dedicated items ahead of the frontline three.

Best Augments

Vanguard or Elderwood verticality augments are the strongest pickups, since both push toward completing the frontline trait a level early. Epic Rolldown and other gold-focused econ augments support the Fast 8 plan well.

Positioning

Brambleback, Ancient Sentinel, and Taric anchor the front three rows. Aphelios needs the safest backline corner on the board, since sources flag this comp as unusually punishing when he gets dove early.

Flex Units and Alternative Carries

Lillia, Gnar, and Ivern are a viable alternate Elderwood-flavoured frontline if you find Elderwood pieces faster than Vanguard ones; the shell and Aphelios core stay the same either way.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Consistently S tier once assembled, with genuine flexibility in which frontline trait you complete. The tradeoff is difficulty: every source checked flags this as a harder comp to execute than the other S tier options, mostly around Aphelios's positioning.
